How to Check & Replace the Engine Air Filter
2004-2009 Toyota Prius

Notes

Just like changing the cabin air filter there's no reason to pay a shop to do this when you can do it yourself in less than 5 minutes. All you need is the new filter. It's also good to know how to check this because it often doesn't need to be changed as regularly as the maintenance schedule suggests, it's really one of those things that depends on environmental variables.

Parts/Supplies Needed:

1) Pop the hood and then release the 4 clips circled in red and the top plastic cover lifts off and the filter can be removed.

New vs. old. Mine really wasn't bad at all but I replaced it anyway so I had a baseline. This was my first change after buying the car with no maintenance records.

2) Install new/old filter depending on what you're doing, it only goes in one way. Just make sure to get the top cover in under the notches where the blue arrows are pointing, then reattach the 4 clips. If you changed the filter record the date & mileage you changed it.
